Overview
Dodl is a low-cost investment app from AJ Bell, aimed at investors who want AJ Bell’s backing and FSCS protection without the complexity of its full platform. Instead of AJ Bell’s capped percentage fee, Dodl charges a single flat rate across a deliberately streamlined range of AJ Bell funds, themed ETF collections, and UK/US shares.
The fee structure
Dodl charges 0.15% of your investment value per year, with a minimum of £1/month, and no additional dealing fees for buying or selling. The same rate applies across the ISA and GIA.
Dodl also offers a “Pension” product at the same 0.15% fee — but you cannot draw down from it directly. You’d need to transfer it to another provider first to access the money in retirement. Because of that, we don’t treat it as a real SIPP alternative here: if you want a pension you can actually draw from on this platform, look at AJ Bell or another provider with in-specie drawdown instead.
Who is Dodl best for?
- Cost-conscious beginners who want a simple, low, uncapped percentage fee without comparing tiers or caps
- Smaller portfolios — with no minimum beyond £1/month and no dealing fees, the flat 0.15% is competitive well before AJ Bell’s own capped-fee structure catches up
- Investors who value FSCS protection and an established backer (AJ Bell) but don’t need a wide investment range
Limitations
- Streamlined range only — a curated set of funds, themed ETFs, and shares, not the full market
- App-only — no web platform
- No Junior ISA
- No usable SIPP — the “Pension” product cannot be drawn down from directly; you’d need to transfer out to another provider first
Verdict
Dodl is a straightforward, low-cost option for investors who want AJ Bell’s reliability without AJ Bell’s full complexity. For a simple ISA or GIA with a small, curated fund and ETF range, the flat 0.15% is hard to beat below AJ Bell’s own £42/year ETF cap crossover point. Compare against AJ Bell directly if you might want a wider range later. Use our calculator to compare exact costs at your portfolio size.
